What is a pink slip?

The eSafety check formerly known as pink slip is a certificate that proves that your car or motorcycle has been inspected and is safe to drive on the roads.

It is a legal requirement in New South Wales to obtain or renew vehicle registration for vehicles of five or more years old.

Your registration renewal papers will state whether or not you need an inspection.

A mechanic will check to see if your car is safe to drive and send the government a report so you can renew your registration.

This might seem like a no-brainer, but it is important to make sure that your car is in good working order before you take it to get a pink slip.

What happens if you fail a pink slip?

If your car fails the inspection and you are not issued with a pink slip, then you will need to have the necessary repairs carried out.

You do not need to pay again if you carry out the repairs indicated by the mechanic within 14 days and the safety check is carried out by the same pink slip provider as the first time.

Can you drive an unregistered car to get pink slip?

According to the New South Wales government website you can drive an unregistered vehicle to:

  • the place where the vehicle is garaged
  • the office of a licensed insurer
  • get the vehicle repaired by a mechanic
  • get the vehicle inspected at an authorised vehicle inspection station
  • a place directly related to the registration process.

If you are driving without registration and get pulled over by the police, you may need to show them proof that your trip is to get your vehicle registered. We recommend that you make an appointment for the inspection which can be verified with the vehicle examiner if required.

If you drive without registration or insurance, you could get demerit points and a fine of $607.

How long does a pink slip last for in NSW?

A pink slip for a light vehicle, such as a standard car, is valid for six months, except for public passenger vehicles.

You must use the pink slip report to renew your registration within six months of the inspection. If you do not register your car within that time, you will need to pay for another pink slip inspection and the vehicle must pass again.

Please, check your registration papers to see if an inspection is necessary.

How much is a pink slip in NSW?

The cost of a pink slip varies depending on the type of vehicle you have. The price is set by the RMS (Roads and Maritime Services). A standard passenger vehicle pink slip will cost $43. You can check the rates here: Pink Slip Price.

What is the difference between a Blue Slip and a Pink Slip in NSW?

As explained above, a pink slip is the safety check required for a vehicle to be able to be re-registered in NSW. A blue slip is an inspection as well, although it goes beyond a regular safety inspection and also includes the identification of the vehicle via chassis number, VIN number and engine number as well as other requirements.

A blue slip is required:

  • If a vehicle has been unregistered for more than 90 days.
  • If a vehicle is being transferred from another state into NSW.
  • If a vehicle has been imported.

If any of these circumstances apply to you, then you will need to obtain a blue slip before you can register your vehicle in NSW.

How to get a pink slip?

The process is actually quite simple.

First, you need to find a pink slip provider in your area.

There are a few different ways to do this, but the best way is to search our directory.

Once you have found a pink slip provider, you need to make an appointment. You can book an appointment by phone, and many providers also book online. All the telephone numbers and websites can be found in our directory.

When you make the appointment, you will need to provide the pink slip provider with some basic information about your car. This includes the make, model, and year of your car.

You will also need to provide the pink slip provider with your contact information.

Once you have provided the pink slip provider with this information, you will be able to schedule an appointment.

During the appointment, the pink slip provider will inspect your vehicle.

It usually takes about half an hour and they will check critical safety points of your vehicle. You can take a look at our checklist to see which areas of your vehicle are most commonly inspected.
